USC Beaufort men finish 3rd at NAIA National Championship

The USC Beaufort men's golf team's quest for a national title fell short Friday, but the Sand Sharks finished in third place -- the best finish in the program's brief history -- at the NAIA National Championship at TPC at Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.

The Sand Sharks had their worst day of the 72-hole tournament Friday, shooting 301 to slip one spot in the team standings. Oklahoma Christian ran away with the team title at 1,150, followed by British Columbia at 1,172 and USCB at 1,181.

"Winning is a funny thing in golf, because it not only requires good, solid play and making smart decisions, but it also requires some luck," USCB director of golf Shane LeBaron said. "I'm so proud of them. They were working hard. Their scores don't show how hard they worked. There was not an ounce of quit in anything they did."

The event was the last collegiate tournament for Chris Lane II, George Thacker and Jon Pannone, and all three went out strong. Lane and Thacker tied for eighth place to earn all-tournament honors, and Pannone was named a first-team selecton to the NAIA Ping All-American team.

The trio helped the Sand Sharks to three consecutive trips to nationals, finishing seventh in 2009, fourth last year and third this year.

"It's been special. It's been real special," Pannone said. "Unfortunately, we didn't get the big one, but we had a special year that is going to be talked about by future teams, and it set the standard for the program."
