USC Beaufort men in 2nd at NAIA meet after long day

After more than 12 hours on the golf course Thursday, the USC Beaufort men's golf team emerged in second place through three rounds of the NAIA National Championship at TPC at Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.

But the Sand Sharks have an almost insurmountable deficit to make up today.

Wire-to-wire leader Oklahoma Christian posted a team score of 283 in the third round -- only two shots off the mark it set Tuesday for the best round of the tournament -- and leads USCB by 23 shots heading into the final round.

Oklahoma Christian is at 857 through 54 holes, with USCB at 880 and British Columbia at 881.

"We had chances to gain ground, but coming down the stretch and being that tired, it's hard to keep it together," USCB director of golf Shane LeBaron said. "There was a lot of heart out there. There weren't enough Snickers bars and protein bars."

The teams teed off at 8 a.m. Central time to finish the second round, then went back out in a shotgun start to play the third round.

The pace of play was terribly slow with 156 players on the course at once, LeBaron said, and the third round didn't wrap up until about 8:30 p.m.

"They wanted a 72-hole tournament, and in order to do it, this is what had to be done," LeBaron said.

Today's final round should run more smoothly -- the field was cut to the top 17 teams and the top 40 individuals.
