USCB men 13 shots back after first day of NAIA tournament

A few stumbles at the end of the round caused the USC Beaufort men's golf team to drop a few shots, but the Sand Sharks stayed in contention after the first day of the NAIA National Championship, which was shortened because of thunderstorms Tuesday at TPC at Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.

Second-ranked USCB posted a team score of 294 and is 13 shots behind clubhouse leader Oklahoma Christian.

The Sand Sharks were one of 18 teams to finish their round; 11 teams were left on the course when play was suspended. The first round will resume at 6 a.m. Central time, weather permitting, with the second round to follow.

Among the teams that finished, USCB is tied for fourth.

"The guys hit it well; there were some issues with putting," director of golf Shane LeBaron said. "We really had things going pretty good, but coming down the stretch the last three holes, we kind of had some things slip away."

Chris Lane II and George Thacker led USCB with rounds of 1-over-par 72, followed by Jon Pannone with a 73. Luke McClellan shot 77, and Jack Bingham rounded out the lineup with a 79.

Play was suspended for the day shortly after 7 p.m. Central time because of thunderstorms. LeBaron said the storms were expected to continue through the night, perhaps bringing difficult conditions for the teams that have to finish their first round and play their second round early today.

"We're in a good position and looking forward to teeing it up tomorrow," LeBaron said. "It's a solid start to the marathon, so we just have to keep going."
