Sand Sharks notch first Sun Conference tournament win

The USC Beaufort baseball team hit two milestones Wednesday, as the Sand Sharks earned the 100th victory in the program's three-year history and picked up their first Sun Conference Tournament win with an 8-3 victory against Webber International at City of Palms Park in Fort Myers, Fla.

The win kept the Sand Sharks alive in the double-elimination tournament. They will play SCAD Savannah at 3 p.m. today in another elimination game.

Left-hander Adam Miller was outstanding for USCB, needing only 95 pitches to throw a complete-game seven-hitter. Miller allowed three runs on five hits in the fifth inning, but he settled down and faced the minimum 12 batters the rest of the way, as a pair of double plays erased the two walks he allowed after the fifth.

The Sand Sharks (28-20) staked Miller to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, sending eight batters to the plate against starter Rob Lane. They made it 4-0 on Erik Armstrong's solo home run in the fourth -- the first out-of-the-park home run of the tournament.

Webber International (30-26) got back in it with its big inning, but the Sand Sharks put it away with a four-run eighth capped by David O'Neil's two-run single.

Armstrong and Spencer Jackson had three hits apiece for the Sand Sharks.

Miller's endurance helped USCB save its bullpen for what could be a long day today. If the Sand Sharks win at 3 p.m., they will play again at 7 p.m. against the loser of this morning's game between Embry-Riddle and St. Thomas.

All three of USCB's usual weekend starters have pitched in the past two games -- regular No. 3 starter Michael Heesch pitched in relief in Tuesday's opener -- so coach Rick Sofield's options are limited today.
