Dexter Price responded exactly how USC Beaufort coach Rick Sofield hoped he would when he moved the junior right-hander into the No. 1 slot in the weekend rotation, as Price tossed a two-hitter Friday at Hardeeville's Richard Gray Baseball Complex to lead the Sand Sharks to a 7-0 victory in the opener of their three-game Sun Conference series with Warner.
The Sand Sharks (18-12, 7-9 Sun Conference) gave Price a four-run cushion with a big third inning, and that was more than enough support. The transfer from Auburn allowed just two singles, and he walked one while striking out five.
USCB roughed up Royals starter Aaron Kehres for six runs -- four earned -- on 12 hits over 5 2-3 innings. Kehres had only allowed two earned runs over 26 1-3 innings in his previous seven appearances. Spencer Jackson and Clay Bonds led the Sand Sharks' offense, as each went 3 for 5 with two RBIs.
The win pulls USCB even with Warner (19-13-1, 7-9 Sun Conference) in the conference standings. The Sand Sharks began the day a game out of fifth place, where Warner, Northwood and Southeastern sat in a three-way tie. The top six teams qualify for next month's Sun Conference tournament.
The series concludes with a doubleheader beginning at noon today.
