Sand Sharks sit sixth after windy first day in Charleston

The USC Beaufort men's golf team sits in the middle of a pack of NCAA Division I schools heading into the final round of the Charleston Southern University Kickoff Tournament at Coosaw Creek Country Club.

Through 36 holes, the Sand Sharks are in sixth among the 12-team field, but they're only three shots behind third-place Charleston Southern. USCB posted a team score of 604 on Monday; Campbell University leads the way at 585.

After an opening round score of 295, USCB coach Shane LeBaron had an eye on moving up the leaderboard during the afternoon round. But windy conditions made it tough for anyone to score low, and the Sand Sharks stayed right where they were — in sixth place.George Thacker had the best day for the Sand Sharks, carding rounds of 70 and 78. He is tied for 11th overall. Teammate Reed Howard is two shots back and tied for 18th.

The tournament wraps up with the final 18 holes today.

"We're kind of excited about tomorrow," LeBaron said. "I thought we really had them this afternoon, and it just didn't work out that way."
