C.J. Cummings won the gold medal in the 69-kilogram weight class Thursday at the Youth Pan American Games in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

Beaufort’s Cummings lifted a total of 302 kg for a new Youth Pan Am Games record.

On his third snatch attempt, he lifted 134 to set a new Youth Pan Am and a Junior American record. His first two lifts were 124 and 129 kg.

In the clean and jerk, Cummings successfully lifted 160 kg, which gave him the gold, and then 168 kg, but he failed on his final attempt at 176.

The 176 would have given him the official world youth record for his total lift.

Cummings has two more years in the youth age division.
