Golf Roundup, June 10: Bogey-free start puts Bryson Nimmer on top at SCGA Junior

Coming off his third-place finish at the Jimmy Self tournament last weekend, Hilton Head Christian Academy's Bryson Nimmer of Bluffton leads after Day 1 of the 56th annual SCGA Junior Championship with a spectacular round in hot, sticky conditions at Willow Creek Golf Club in Greer.

The Clemson signee shot a bogey-free opening round of 6-under 66 highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 15th hole.

Nimmer has the chance to achieve a first in South Carolina golf -- join his father Tony Nimmer as the only father-son duo to both earn the title of SCGA Junior champion. Tony Nimmer won the championship back in 1978.

Nimmer will hold onto a two-shot lead over Wil Sheppard of Mount Pleasant, who had the low score of the afternoon wave with a bogey-free 68.

Three strokes off the lead are Justin Hood of St. Matthews and Jack Parrott of Columbia.

In the Boys 13-14 Division, Nick Willis of Cowpens shot an even-par round and has a one-shot lead over Jacob Bridgeman of Inman.

The low eight scores of the tournament automatically qualify for the 39th Annual Georgia-South Carolina Junior Team Matches to be played at Ansley Golf Club -- Settindown Creek in Roswell, Ga. These are the longest running interstate matches in the country.

The 2014 SCGA Junior has five players that participated in the matches last year -- the aforementioned Hood, as well as, Michael McKee, Zach McLain, Jamie Wilson and 2013 SCGA Junior champion Josh Fickes of Beaufort, who finished his round Tuesday at 4-over 76, 10 shots back of the lead.

Following Wednesday's second round, the field will be cut to the low 48 scores and ties in the older age bracket and the low 10 scores and ties in the Boys 13-14 Division.

The SCGA Junior Championship, sponsored by The Heritage Classic Foundation, is one of 19 major events conducted by the SCGA.
