Goose Creek defeated Beaufort, 14-1, in an American Legion baseball state tournament play-in game on Sunday at Beaufort High School, ending the Ospreys' season.

Goose Creek will head to Sumter next week to play Inman in the first round of the state tournament.

"From the first inning on, Goose Creek came out hitting the baseball and didn't let up," Beaufort coach Mike Smith said. "Just one of those days when you have to congratulate them on doing everything they could to make it on to the state tournament."

Thomas Smith (6-1) took the loss on the mound for the Ospreys, who played six games in seven days.

"It finally caught up with us," Mike Smith said.

Mike Smith, who said he was proud of his team, pointed out that if the Ospreys had won any one of their final three games, they would have reached the state tournament.

"It just wasn't meant to be," Mike Smith said.
