Top-ranked North Carolina baseball team pounds out win over Clemson, 10-3

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Top-ranked North Carolina scored four runs in both the first and third innings and cruised to a 10-3 win over Clemson on Saturday night.

Cody Stubbs led the way for the Tar Heels (24-1 overall, 8-1 ACC) by going 4 for 5 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs. Chaz Frank and Colin Moran added three hits apiece for North Carolina -- which had 19 hits -- while Matt Roberts had a game-high four RBIs.

Tyler Slaton went 3 for 4 with two runs and a walk to lead the Tigers (16-10 overall, 5-5 ACC), who totaled 11 hits in the contest.

North Carolina starter Kent Emanuel (5-1) pitched 8 strong innings to earn the win. He scattered nine hits and allowed only one run and one walk with five strikeouts.

Tiger starter Daniel Gossett (3-2) took the loss, giving up 10 hits and eight runs in 3 innings. Mike Kent pitched the final 5 innings and gave up just two runs and no walks.

Clemson and North Carolina play game two of the series at 7 p.m. Sunday.
