Holmes pitches South Carolina past College of Charleston, 3-1

CHARLESTON -- Colby Holmes gave up one run in 7 1-3 innings to guide the 14th-ranked South Carolina baseball team to a 3-1 win Tuesday at the College of Charleston.

Holmes (2-2) gave up four hits while striking out eight. Senior left-hander Adam Westmoreland hurled a perfect ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season for the Gamecocks (19-6).

Starter Nathan Helvey lasted only 2 2-3 innings for College of Charleston (13-11). He allowed two runs on six hits.

LB Dantzler had two doubles and an RBI. Grayson Greiner drove in a run in the first inning for South Carolina. Dante Rosenberg had a sacrifice fly in the sixth to plate the Gamecocks' final run of the night. Joey Pankake went 2 for 4 with a run scored. He has reached base safely in 17 consecutive games.

Tyler Jackson drove in the Cougars' lone run with a double in the bottom of the third inning.

The Gamecocks return to action on Thursday night, beginning a three-game SEC series with Texas A&M at Carolina Stadium.
