Epperson closing in on final stage of PGA Tour Q-School

Hilton Head Island's Chris Epperson continued to move up in his quest for a PGA Tour playing card, shooting an even-par 72 on Thursday during the second stage of Qualifying School at Humble, Texas.

On a rough day for scoring at Redstone Golf Club -- only 13 of the 71 players broke par -- Epperson's 72 was enough to help him climb into a tie for 15th place after three rounds. The top 19 positions and ties after today's final round advance to the final stage of qualifying, which will be held Dec. 1-6 at Orange County National Golf Center & Lodge near Orlando, Fla.

After two rounds at Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta, Calif., Hilton Head Island's Martin Catalioto is tied in 56th place. His second-round score of 73 was six strokes better than his first, but he'll have to make up plenty of ground to advance. The top 20 and ties will move on, which is currently 10 strokes ahead of where Catalioto stands.

Bluffton's Tom McKnight held steady in the third round at Champions Tour Q-School, carding another even-par 72 at TPC Eagle Trace in Coral Springs, Fla. McKnight began the day tied for 22nd place and finished in a tie for 23rd. He is 3 under overall, which is 13 shots behind leader Keith Clearwater.

The Champions Tour qualifier wraps up today. The top five finishers will earn fully exempt status in full-field events for 2011, while the next seven positions will earn conditional exemptions. The top 30 and ties are eligible to enter weekly event qualifiers.
