Hilton Head Island's Chris Epperson bounced back from a slow first round in the second stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School, shooting a 1-under-par 71 at Redstone Golf Club in Humble, Texas, to move up to a tie for 20th after Wednesday's second round.
Epperson stands at 1 over halfway through the stage. He is 11 shots behind leader James Driscoll. The top 19 positions and ties after Friday's final round advance to the final stage of qualifying.
At Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta, Calif., Hilton Head Island's Martin Catalioto began the second stage with a 7-over 79 on Wednesday, which leaves him eight shots out of 20th place -- the cut for advancing.
On the Champions Tour, Bluffton resident Tom McKnight dropped back in the final qualifying stage, shooting an even-par 72 to slide down to a tie for 22nd place after the second round.

McKnight had three birdies on the front nine at TPC Eagle Trace in Coral Springs, Fla., but finished up with a bogey on No. 18 for the second straight day to stay at 3 under overall. He trails leader Frankie Minoza by seven strokes.
The qualifier runs through Friday. The top five finishers will earn fully exempt status in full-field events on the 2011 Champions Tour, while the next seven positions will earn conditional exemptions. The top 30 and ties are eligible to enter weekly event qualifiers.
