Delcher defeated in 1st round of USGA Senior Am match play

Bluffton golfer Duke Delcher was defeated in the first round of match play on Monday at the 2010 USGA Senior Amateur Championships at Lake Nona Golf and Country Club in Orlando, Fla.

Delcher lost 6 and 5 to Tim Miller, of Kokomo, Ind.

Miller shot 5-under, making six birdies over 13 holes.

"I played pretty well," Delcher said. "I think (Miller) had a career day. What can I say?"

Delcher advanced to the match-play portion of the event with a 72 in Saturday's opening round followed by a 6-over-par 78 on Sunday. He finished qualifying in a tie for 38th at 140.

"I'm quite disappointed that I didn't go further," Delcher said. "I fully expected to."

Bluffton's Bill Palmer was also in the field but withdrew Sunday.

The second and third rounds of match play are scheduled for today, beginning at 8:15 a.m. The quarterfinal and semifinal matches are scheduled for Wednesday, while the 18-hole championship final will be played Thursday morning.

The USGA Senior Amateur, open to golfers 55 and over, is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA.
