Sabrina Ionescu to Make Liberty Season Debut vs Wings

The New York Knicks have captured all five boroughs, wrapped in hope that they’ll win their first NBA title since 1973, but lest we forget, the New York Liberty brought a parade down Broadway after winning their first WNBA title in 2024.

That championship run was spearheaded by All-Star guard Sabrina Ionescu, two-time WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart, and 2024 WNBA Finals MVP Jonquel Jones. Those three, plus newly signed All-Star forward Satou Sabally, are expected to lead the Liberty to another championship this year.

Sabally made her Liberty debut in a loss to Golden State on Thursday, and we’ll finally get our first look at the Liberty’s new “Big 4” on Sunday.

Ionescu confirmed to reporters Saturday that she will make her season debut against the Dallas Wings at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon.

Ionescu missed the first five games of the 2026 season after rolling her ankle in the third quarter of the Liberty’s final preseason game on May 3. An MRI the following day revealed a “left foot injury,” and the team said she would be re-evaluated in two weeks.

“[Liberty head coach] Chris DeMarco said he expects there to likely be a minutes restriction on Sabrina - though she said her cardio has been good in recovery - and likely one for Satou as well,” Myles Ehrlich wrote on X. “Both will see how they feel postgame before we know about their status on Monday.”

The Liberty will host the Portland Fire on Monday night.

New York is 3-2 through its first five games this season. Stewart leads the Liberty with 22 points per game and 9.0 rebounds per game.
