Perhaps the recent letter on bicycles using the roads instead of bike paths indicates the real problem.
The state of South Carolina considers bicycles as vehicles and able to use the roadways in the state subject to the same rules and regulations as passenger vehicles. Having ridden a bicycle on South Carolina roads for more than 27 years, all that is required is understanding and common courtesy for safe coexistence.
Bike paths are great for pure recreational riding, but not people choosing a healthy alternative to get to work. Bike paths do not allow riders the speed or distance needed for a proper workout to improve fitness and weight management.
I have seen bad behavior by motor vehicle drivers and bicyclists as well. What we need is for everyone to know the law and treat each other as we would want to be treated if the situation were reversed.
