Thank you, state Sen. Tom Davis for your recent excellent analysis of our highway and roads situation in South Carolina.
Our transportation system should be an embarrassment to legislative officials who, instead of addressing the sordid, underlying problems with the South Carolina Department of Transportation, are willing to hammer the taxpayers for more money to fund business as usual. The results will be no better, just more expensive.
Unfortunately, our state Constitution of 1868 provides the legislature far too much power; and in many cases such as this, ties the hands of the governor. The foxes rule the henhouse, yet the media castigates chief executives such as Mark Sanford and Nikki Haley when they rail against the good ol' boy network.
For South Carolina to have a chance of fixing deep-seated problems in transportation, education and ethics, we will need more champions like Davis who aren't afraid to stand against the status quo.
Perhaps one day we'll have enough legislators with the moral character to reform themselves and our lopsided power system for the good of us all.
