It is regrettable that Beaufort County leadership continues to push ahead with a multimillion-dollar expansion of the Hilton Head Island Airport that it cannot economically justify.
If correctly done using Federal Aviation Administration guidelines, the county's benefit-cost analysis would show less than a 10-cent return on each dollar invested.
Here are two problems with the current analysis:

Even if these two errors were corrected, the county's analysis would show a benefit of only 25 cents for every dollar spent on expansion.
Redirecting a proportion of expenditures associated with just these two assumed benefits could avoid the recent reduction of hours at libraries, recycling centers and swimming pools.
That Beaufort County continues to move forward with an expansion that it cannot economically justify demonstrates a lack of public accountability.
