I read with interest the recent article about the Town of Hilton Head Island allocating $450,000 to its economic development corporation for the next fiscal year. The article states that half of the money, $225,000, will pay for an executive director and assistant. It seems to me that the biggest benefactor of "economic development" will be the executive director and assistant. Is this what is called crony capitalism?
I also noticed that this year's budget is $150,000. So Hilton Head is increasing the budget by $300,000, with nearly all of it -- $225,000 -- going to an executive director and assistant. No wonder the corporation's board chairman stated that they operate on a thin budget.
