Letters to the Editor

Arts center production of 'Chicago' not offensive

I have never written a letter to the editor before, but there is always a first, and this is it. I am writing in support of the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina and its production of "Chicago."

I went with friends, and we thoroughly enjoyed the production. In fact, we have never been to a bad performance there. The performers, costumes and staging are always first rate.

It was obvious that your recent letter writers ("Arts center, community need to clean up act") had no idea about the subject content (murder, most foul) or the setting. Since "Chicago" has been around for a number of years, receiving Tonys, Academy Awards and Golden Globes, I find this a little surprising.

While I agree that this is not a show for children, it was terrific theater. Both of my guests have seen professional productions before at larger venues, and both agreed that this was as good as, if not better than, any of those productions.

As for the "bedroom scene," I noticed the writers were offended, but not enough to leave. (This scene was in the first production number.)

As for reflecting "our Christian heritage," this was entertainment, not a sermon, and the arts center wouldn't be doing its job if it "reflected" only one point of view.

Kudos to the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, and keep up the great work.
