No need for arts center to pose false competition

As supporters of the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, my wife and I were disappointed with a recent mailing stating, "The arts center is the only regional organization that offers a year-round calendar with a full range of professional programming, as well as providing the degree of professional management and staffing that the arts center embodies."

Seasons vary for different art forms, and Hilton Head Island's performing arts organizations conform to national norms. South Carolina Repertory Theatre presents a great season of shows. The Hilton Head Choral Society's outstanding performances are very well received. The Jazz Corner offers top jazz performances year round and is ranked in the top 100 jazz clubs by Downbeat magazine. The Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra offers a full concert program and is staffed by highly professional salaried individuals. The International Piano Competition, sponsored by the symphony, attracts talented artists from all over the world.

It is perhaps time for arts center officials to recognize that the center is very much appreciated as a tremendous asset to the arts scene, has the support of the community and the town government, and is not competing with Hilton Head's other arts organizations, but rather is being reinforced by these thriving arts organizations. We wish them well as they struggle to meet the goals they have set to continue bringing their important programming to our community. We hope they recognize that they are but one piece in a highly respected patchwork of artistic offerings on Hilton Head.
