I know some readers of The Island Packet do not agree with the Greater Bluffton Republican Club's idea to give away an AR-15 rifle.
The group's leadership has been called stupid, criminal, and most ridiculously, insensitive.
Let me cover the last one. Some readers took offense because of what happened in Newtown, Conn.
Well, Bill Stevens, a father of a 5th-grader in Newtown, calls further gun control "asinine." Mark Mattioli, the father of a 5-year-old Newtown victim, recently came out against further gun control. "I feel it's a false premise. Gun control works for people who abide by the laws," he said. "Criminals who conduct most of the gun crime don't care about the law." He also spoke about clip size, stating large clip sizes are out there, and criminals are not going to hand those back.
Are these two people insensitive to their own tragedy?
This issue isn't about the gun or clip size. This issue is about the size of government. That was our purpose. The government oversteps its bounds, and we the people need to stop it -- by being active, by voting and being well aware of the issues at hand.
