No reason to delay open burning ban

Last month, Myrtle Beach had a significant fire caused by open burning of yard waste. On March 12, its council immediately passed an ordinance banning open burning of these materials.

Hilton Head Island's Town Council has had numerous discussions on this issue, but to date has failed to act. To anyone following this issue it is painfully apparent that the council is "waiting for a fire."

It is time for council to proactively demonstrate its environmental stewardship and enact a ban on the open burning of yard waste and debris.
