Superintendent benefits raise some questions

Regarding the contract for the new Beaufort County superintendent, why would someone making at least $220,000 annually need gas money, especially $850 a month?

Where is he going? At $4 a gallon, that's more than 210 gallons. With good mileage (say 20 miles per gallon on the low side), that's more than 4,000 miles a month, almost 50,000 miles a year.

And later in his tenure, a 20 percent deposit in his retirement plan would be at least an additional $44,000 annually. After 30 years in education, his retirement is probably already worth more than $120,000 annually.

But you know what, as good as that all sounds, it's still not as good as the deal the CEO of the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce gets, and at least we have some idea what the superintendent does.
