Vote 'yes' Nov. 6 for land preservation

On Nov. 6, voters in Beaufort County will have the chance to continue one of the most important and successful programs in the county -- a bond referendum measure to provide another $25 million for the Rural and Critical Lands Program.

In 2002 and again in 2006, voters gave overwhelming support for a bold and forward-looking initiative to commit a total of $90 million for the purchase of property and conservation easements from willing sellers.

The concept was to permanently preserve our naturally beautiful and historic sites and farmlands across the county and prevent them from being developed. Most would agree that this program has proved to be a real success story, thus far preserving 76 properties totaling 20,400 acres.

The previous $90 million is almost used up, and now we have the opportunity to build on this success by approving a renewal of this program by voting "yes" for an additional $25 million in bonds for the Rural and Critical Lands Program.

With this program, Beaufort County residents have shown that we know how to lead the region in preserving our area's natural beauty and that we care about the future of our community.
