My wife and I have been in Sun City Hilton Head for 18 months. We came here from Jackson, Calif.
We were in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, one hour east of Sacramento. In that pristine location, the Jackson Band of Mi-Wuk Indians built The Jackson Rancheria-Casino, with approximately 300 rooms, a convention center, fabulous restaurants, an RV park, plenty of parking and, of course, gambling.
Ten minutes from my house was a great evening. We could eat well at great prices, play a few slots and see a concert.
The casino was self-sufficient. It had water-treatment facilities for about 40,000 people, fire protection services. It had a police department that was comparable to the county sheriff's department. The casino would share all of its services with our community whenever needed.
The casino provides 2,500 to 3,000 full-time jobs. Employees with children could get on-site day care for $1 a day. They paid for road improvements to mitigate the increase in traffic. They even built our town a new fire station and low-income housing nearby. A medical complex was on site.
The only down side I saw was our court calendar got crowded because their police force made many arrests.
I am very much in support of a casino in Hardeeville. I will look forward to seeing friends and neighbors with good paying jobs and a place close by for entertainment, not to mention revenue to the state, county and city.
