By their works, ye shall know them. It's useful to review a list of traumatic events that occurred over the past two decades, setting the stage for the situation in which we Americans now find ourselves.
In 1994, Republicans in the House of Representatives decided on a course of mindless partisanship that often turned into outright hostility. The composer and conductor of this disharmony was Newt Gingrich. What followed was the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act and the emasculation of other regulations protecting our standard of living and way of life.
Then in 2000, George W. Bush's wealthy friends organized a vast network to bundle campaign contributions for him, an investment which paid off fantastically for them when it resulted in the Bush tax cuts. He was elected by five justices on the Supreme Court, all Republican appointees, and the same court clique followed that up in 2010 with the Citizens United decision that unleashed the super PACs on the election process.
Along the way we were "neo-conned" into two wars, expensive in lives and money. A significant number of misguided and timid Congressional Democrats acquiesced in some of these decisions, but the dominant fingerprints on all of them were undeniably Republican. Something to remember when November rolls around.
