What an outrage. Your lead story Feb. 3 reports an additional $240,000 in accommodations tax revenue going to the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce, bringing their annual total to approximately $1.3 million, despite the the fact that this rogue organization pays its president nearly $350,000 and has 22 employees. (Allegations of larger salary income for the president have appeared in multiple publications and have never been refuted by the chamber.)
Why and for what? Do their operations and results merit or reflect such support?
When I recently corresponded with Town Council members about this fiscal atrocity, only one responded, saying that she was also concerned about supporting such an excessive salary, but she had been "assured" by the chamber that no town funds would go to pay the CEO's salary.
How gullible and lacking in understanding. Don't they realize that dollars are fungible and that dollars going in are indistinguishable from dollars going out? Supporting the entity enables and supports its individual components.
Is this public abuse the fault of the chamber? Only partly. It's mainly due to the financial enablement by Town Council, something about which every citizen can do something.
A roll call of the approval vote should be demanded, and every member voting for this scandalous use of public funds should be drummed out ofoffice at the next election.
That's the way for the citizenry to correct this situation if Town Council members don't know any better.
