Don't let safety, health stand in the way of jobs

Cue the marching bands.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has introduced the outline of a Republican jobs-creation plan. The key part of the plan is to eliminate federal regulations that are a disincentive for employers.

While he did not specify the laws he would target, here are some possibilities:

  • Minimum-wage laws. Employers would hire lots of people for $3 to $4 an hour.
  • Social Security and Medicare. Eliminate new employees from Social Security and avoid the tax on both the worker and the job creator.
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Leave it up to the employee to be careful and work safely. It's his life.
  • Environmental Protection Agency. Polluted air and water shouldn't be blamed on companies that are just trying to increase return to their shareholders.
  • We will just have to see how many of these modest proposals are adopted by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
