Former clerk's sentence certainly didn't fit crime

After reading the sentence given former Beaufort County Clerk of Court Elizabeth Smith, I was in shock at first, and then did a slow burn.

Before moving to the South, I had always heard of the "good old boy mentality" and believed it was Hollywood nonsense until now.

How could a judge issue this kind of sentence for outright theft by any other name? Prosecutors recommended a short prison term. What is going on here? Is it whom you know?

I've read of longer sentences given for far lesser crimes, where not only jail time was imposed, but also many years of probation. Of course, these folks probably didn't have friends in high places.
