County school board should not levy taxes

Allowing the Beaufort County Board of Education to levy taxes would be like putting mice in charge of the cheese. What you end up with is very fat mice and no cheese.

Beaufort County Council is an elected body responsible for passing ordinances, setting county policies and developing an annual budget for the administration of public services. Council members are to ensure the business of Beaufort County is handled in a fiscally responsible manner and in accordance with the will of the people.

The school board is an elected body responsible to ensure excellence in education for the children of Beaufort County. Board members are to ensure the children are given the very best in education, within the resources available for that purpose.

That doesn't mean every child needs a Kindle or a Nook to learn to read. It does mean every child should have access to books and libraries. That doesn't mean every child needs a laptop computer. It does mean every child should have access to a computer lab.

Battles? There should be no "battles" between the school board and County Council. There should be frank, honest and open discussions in order to facilitate an appropriate conclusion to the issues involved.

Proper stewards of Beaufort County tax dollars should always be the first priority for County Council.

To remove the checks-and-balances of County Council over the school board would be injudicious.
