Disaster relief needs to be funding priority

I have looked in vain for someone to write a note of praise for federal agencies that tracked the recent storms, as well as the federal, state, and community agencies that are working tirelessly to aid and benefit victims of these disasters. It is high time that we offer appreciation to the men and women, all government workers no less, who continue aid and assistance to the unfortunates.

One can't help but wonder at the shortsightedness of members of Congress and state legislatures who have slashed and burned the budgets of these agencies. With departments' funds exhausted, who will assist these communities and citizens with the financing and funding needed to rebuild their lives and neighborhoods?

At Boy's Town, Neb., there is a statue of a healthy youth carrying a young boy on his back. At the base is the inscription: "He ain't heavy, he's my brother."

What has happened to us? How could we have forgotten so soon?
