Local options can help prevent suicide

In recognition that National Suicide Prevention Week is Sept. 4 to 10, I would like to encourage the public to learn more about suicide and ways to help prevent it. Learning some of the key suicide warning signs -- such as feeling hopeless, withdrawing from friends and family and making suicidal statements -- can help save lives.

Another way to help is by participating in the upcoming Out of the Darkness Community Walk in Bluffton at the University of South Carolina Beaufort on Oct. 9. It starts at 2 p.m., with registration at 1 p.m. Whether you have been touched by suicide or not, we encourage everyone to participate.

Funds will support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which funds national and local suicide prevention programs and research. To register for the walk, call 843-540-1841 or visit www.afsp.org and click on Out of the Darkness Walks to find the Bluffton walk.
