Sun City pool hours need to be adjusted

As a concerned grandfather, melanoma survivor and Sun City Hilton Head resident, I petitioned, unsuccessfully, for the board of directors to consider modifying its pool regulations to allow visiting grandchildren access to one of our three outdoor pool at hours other than the present 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1 to 4 p.m.

In my youth, no one knew that these are the very hours most dangerous for exposure to sunlight. I have had two melanomas, plus numerous other skin cancers.

For the health of all of us, especially our precious grandchildren, I suggested to the board two possible solutions: evening hours (4 to 7 p.m.) at a pool, or all day and evening at one pool a week.

Because pool attendance could be spaced out over more hours, the pleasant side benefit would be lessening the congestion (and noise) when all Sun City grandkids crowd into the one pool available for the allotted three-hour period.

While I realize that the facilities are primarily for the use of the residents, everyone -- residents and management alike -- knows that a major draw of Sun City is how often we get to see our kids and grandkids because of these facilities.

Sun City residents, how about adding your petition to mine, asking the board to modify pool hours for everyone's health, especially that of our dear children and grandchildren?

E-mail or phone your neighborhood representative so that he or she may inform the board of your request. Thank you.
