A recent letter writer has it exactly right. Trees are terrible noise barriers.
I learned this long ago when I wanted to plant some trees and bushes as a barrier. None of the people I called to do this for me would do it. They knew I would be unhappy because it wouldn't work. I was told that I needed mass, such as a wall, to stop sound.
We all know this. We've all seen the wall along the Cross Island Parkway. We've all seen similar walls along interstate highways, where they get close to residential areas. We all know you don't plant noise barriers, you build them.
I think the concerned church owes this community a rebuttal. After all, the Hilton Head Island Airport is our airport, and these are our trees.
