Opportunities abound to help military families

In a recent White House initiative, Michelle Obama and Jill Biden have joined forces for America's military families. Are you aware of two important programs within our community? Do you proudly support either program?

Operation R&R helps service men and women reconnect with their families when they return from Iraq and Afghanistan. Owners of vacation homes donate their property to those returning from overseas duty, local restaurants provide meals, grocers and other merchants contribute goods for a stress-free week of rest and relaxation. For more details, visit www.operationrestandrelax.org.

The Lt. Dan Weekend brings severely injured veterans from our wars against terrorism to the Lowcountry, where they heal under the warmth of our sun and Southern hospitality. From Sept. 14-18, 100 wounded service members and caregivers will gather. Once again, Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band will perform in a fundraising concert at the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park in Beaufort. Sinise, Lt. Dan in "Forrest Gump," has contributed $15,000 toward concert expenses. But we need another $20,000 to make this event happen. Like last year, proceeds should top $200,000 and those funds are dedicated to improve the quality of life for severely wounded veterans. Learn more about Lt. Dan events at www.LDW2.com and make a donation today. Then let Michelle and Jill know about our outstanding commitment to America's military families at www.joiningforces.gov. Spread the word.
