Not all resort owners are treated equally

My license plate reads "Taxation Without Representation." It is from Washington, D.C., but might just as well be from Palmetto Dunes Resort.

In the District of Columbia, we have no vote in Congress and little control of our own funds. As a condominium owner in the Queens Grant section of Palmetto Dunes, the same situation exists.

Every unit in the resort has the same fee -- so we are assessed the same fee as the single-family homes by the property owners' association. But we have little or no voice, fewer services and much less protection.

There have been several reports of break-ins in Queens Grant recently, yet we have no gate, no guard and no surveillance cameras. Amazing, considering our combined funds far outweigh the total fees from single-family homes.

To quote Yogi Berra, it is "deja vu all over again."
