As a Beaufort County resident homeowner, business owner and parent, I am writing this as a call for help to my fellow community members. Please join me to save our school district. Our district is in financial crisis and we need everyone's support.
I believe that education is the foundation for everything. If we want our community to thrive, then we need to support the public school system.
Please show your support by attending the Beaufort County Council meeting at 4 p.m. Monday at the Hilton Head Island library.
As a business owner, I wholly support the school district's budget and its previous request for a 3 percent tax increase. I realize the state of the economy and I sympathize with those businesses having tough times. We all are tightening our belts. But we have to do whatever it takes to make sure our education system doesn't fail. If County Council doesn't approve the tax increase, then that is surely what will happen to our schools. What then?
A 3 percent tax increase on a second home worth $250,000 is $40. If your commercial property tax bill was close to $5,000, then the increase is $150. These are reasonable increases when considering our future as a community.
Under Act 388, resident homeowners' taxes do not fund school operations. All resident homeowners need to contact legislators in order to rectify this absurdity. In the meantime, I urge all homeowners to donate to our school district.
