Motorcyclists need drivers to be aware

It is spring once again and you will be seeing more and more motorcycles on the roads.

Every year, motorcyclists are seriously injured or killed in accidents with cars in Beaufort County. These accidents are often due to the drivers of the cars not paying attention to motorcyclists.

The month of May is National Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month, and I would like to take this opportunity to make our citizens aware of this.

I would like to ask all motorists to please be aware of motorcycles on our highways. Motorcycles are smaller and harder to see than other vehicles on the road. Keep in mind that motorcycles have one headlight. Motorcyclists need their entire lane, so please try not to share their lane. A little common sense, and these tips should make certain situations safer for motorcyclists who share the roads with you.

We have many motorcycle riders in this area, which makes for more chances for accidents. There are motorcycle events almost every weekend all through spring, summer, and fall. Please, let's all work together to make 2011 a safe and enjoyable riding season.
