Don't rush decision on commerce park

Those who watched the movie "Best Little Whore House in Texas" will remember Charles Durning singing, "Dance A Little Side-Step."

If you haven't, go to YouTube.com and watch the video of that song. You will never listen to a politician again without it playing in your head.

Beaufort County Council is doing the "side-step" with the public on the purchase of Beaufort Commerce Park, owned by the Lowcountry Economic Network. On April 25, the council sent the purchase back to its Governmental and Finance committees for a thorough review and recommendation. The task force, appointed by Chairman Weston Newton in February to review the park and economic development, has stated it needs months more to complete its work.

Durning sang, "Now you see me, now you don't."

Ask yourself, why the rush? Has the council found a loophole that will enable it to take $2.5 million of your tax dollars from a reserve fund, to be repaid with a loan at a later date and an increase to your property taxes? Will the council use $1.6 million of the $2.5 million for the purchase and allot the remainder to a maintenance and development fund? If it does, council members can cast a final vote immediately and not present the plan for public scrutiny.

Durning croons, "I love to string the people on." Hmmm, interesting. County Council meets at 4 p.m. Monday in Beaufort.
