Congress past due for its own reform

My version of a "Congressional Reform Act of 2012" would include:

  • Term limits, 12 years only, using one of these options -- two six-year Senate terms, six two-year House terms; or one six-year Senate term and three two-year House terms.
  • No pension. Collect a salary while in office and receive no pay when out of office.
  • No longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of the consumer price index or 3 percent.
  • Participate in the same health care system as the American people.
  • Abide by all laws they impose on the American people.
  • All contracts past and present with Congress are void, effective immediately. The American people did not make contracts with Congress. Congress made those contracts for themselves.
  • Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators. Ours should serve their term or terms, then go home and back to work.
