Disabled veterans merit help from community

Forrest Gump's mama said, "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get."

The injured veterans from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan understand that philosophy better than anyone. Remember the movie's Lt. Dan character, the double-amputee Vietnam War vet? Gary Sinise played that role and now he is supporting our disabled vets in a very special way.

On Sept. 16, Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band will perform at the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park in Beaufort. His appearance coincides with a retreat for 150 seriously injured veterans and their caregivers. Besides the retreat, the Lt. Dan Weekend raises funds and the proceeds go to the Independence Fund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of our disabled vets.

Organizers can't make the Lt. Dan Weekend a success without our help. Join me in showing our gratitude to those who have sacrificed so much. Individual donations and corporate sponsors are needed now.

Let's show our disabled veterans that Beaufort County truly cares about them.
