Hilton Head must have some money for tourney

"There are strange things done in the midnight sun by the men who moil for gold," a poet wrote.

And truly, your story about the ill-advised motion by Hilton Head Island Town Councilman Bill Ferguson on the town's buying the Stoney community property is replete with strange doings.

But the strangest I ever did see in this tale is the spectacle of the town paying $4 million for a piece of property whose potential sales price in a private auction was, according to a statement in the story, around $800,000.

With that kind of cash at Hilton Head's disposal, it strains credulity that Beaufort County Council wants to use our tax dollars and other state residents' tax dollars to support, of all things, a golf tournament to promote Hilton Head Island's tourism industry. A strange tale indeed.
