Without jail time, justice not served

Elizabeth Smith, former Beaufort County Clerk of Court, is not the first elected official to violate the public trust and use public funds illegally. If history serves as lesson, she will not be the last.

With her felony conviction, she loses her voting rights and the ability to hold public office. But will justice be fully served if she does not also serve time in jail?

Will only a monetary fine serve as a deterrent to such egregious acts against the public by future elected officials?
