I hope that Beaufort County Councilman Rick Corporale was misquoted in the March 6 Island Packet, and that he didn't say, "It's not going to break my heart if some teachers have to be laid off. I have lost two jobs in the last six years, OK? Nobody is crying for me."
If he said this, he should step down from his job as county councilman as well.
While tough decisions have to be made during difficult economic times, his cavalier attitude about the potential loss of teachers' jobs and the impact that would have on their families and the children they will no longer teach is insensitive and callous. The fact that he has lost two jobs in the past six years is completely irrelevant and should have no impact on the careers and futures of others.
Rather than showing concern and empathy about the possible and perhaps inevitable loss of jobs, he sounds bitter about his own unfortunate situation and wants to take others down with him.
This is not what I want in a councilman.
