The Beaufort City Council in May 2008 agreed to relocate the banners at Ribaut Road and Bay Street once the new City Hall was completed, believing that the banners violate the city's own sign ordinances, zoning restrictions and the wishes of the neighborhood.
It was agreed that they would be moved to Lovejoy Park, adjacent to the new City Hall, where the site is more appropriate and the traffic counts are higher. It is important to realize that the signs would be relocated, not removed, and that the groups that have used the old site will have the same opportunity to announce their events at the new and improved location.
Another important consideration is the goal we all have of improving the appearance of Beaufort whenever and wherever possible, and that is the desire of the neighborhood. The area at this corner has begun over the last 10-plus years, to reject the highway feel and take on the residential character that the zoning intends, as many homes have been lovingly renovated and the pedestrian traffic has increased.
We plan, with proper permission and at the neighborhood's expense, to transform the vacant-lot appearance of the property into a beautifully landscaped, park-like setting that will serve as a more attractive and meaningful entrance to one of the most beautiful streets and towns anywhere.
