How do we expect to attract any industry here when there is nothing to offer them? No port, no railroad, no interstate, no major airport and no industrial sewer service.
Everything that has been done over the past 10 years indicates that Beaufort County only wants a tourist- and military-based economy.
Did you know that there was once civilian commercial air service from the air station? It was shut down due to lack of support, or not selling enough tickets.
Gulfstream and Boeing are not going to create a corridor that will benefit Beaufort. Someone is attempting to sell snake oil on that one. The new military jets, if they ever make it here, are not going to create any off-base jobs.
Shutting down the Port of Port Royal was a huge mistake. Shutting down the railroad was an even bigger mistake.
I remember when most building supplies, lumber, cement, rock and the like came into Beaufort by rail, and most farm produce and even some of the seafood catch left by rail.
Can Beaufort survive on tourism only? Yes it can, but not with the plans of the present leadership. Can we attract industry? Yes, we can, but not with the plans of the present leadership.
I have a plan, but the problem is the leadership here is too close-minded to listen. Present elected leaders, and many in the past, have no vision. They will not think outside of the box.
