I encourage anyone who is interested in the state of public education in our country to get the documentary DVD "Waiting for Superman."
It really opened my eyes about the issues facing public education and the failed attempts to solve them. It also clearly describes the keys to quality education and the successes of some private and charter schools movements.
The documentary makes its points by following some inner city and suburban parents trying desperately to get a "quality" education for their children.
While I've always been a staunch supporter of public education, I readily admit that vast improvements are needed if this country is to regain its previous educational position in the world.
But I must admit that the current environment does not portend a quick or optimistic outcome to correct the problems now commonly found in the public education systems throughout the country.
