Ban pit bulls; stiffen penalties on owners

The time has passed for our legislature to pay attention to the needs of the people, and one need is to put a stiffer penalty on owners of dogs that attack children.

We see again in the newspaper that a pit bull in the town of Port Royal attacked a 3-year-old child. Twice before, this dog had been caught by county Animal Control officers running free in the neighborhood. A slap on the hand did nothing to correct this problem. Now a little girl has been seriously injured, and the pit bull owner faces a misdemeanor charge.

An automatic penalty of one year in jail should be enforced for any dog owner whose animal attacks a child. Maybe this would awaken dog owners to this negligence.

Pit bulls should be banned, period. There should be no pride in ownership of breeds known to be killers.
