Welcome center plans leave a lot to be desired

My letter concerns the drawing of the proposed Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce welcome center shown in the Packet.

Nothing about this building speaks of Hilton Head or the reason people come here. The bland drawing could depict a high school for Anytown, U.S.A. Nothing about it is special or shows why Hilton Head is different.

Why spend an estimated $4 million or $5 million for a welcome center that has outlived its usefulness? Even the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism says fewer travelers use welcome centers now.

If officials truly wanted to reach tourists, they would skip fireworks in favor of designing a small, one-level aquarium that people would flock to see.
